Interview With Second Graders
Before my partner and I could make the video or the tile for art, we had to interview the elementary school students. During the interview, we had to ask a list of questions, of our own creation, that would help the students to understand our topic as well as help us learn about the gaps in their knowledge of our topic. This was an important step in the development of both our tile and our video because our final products were meant to be viewed and understood by students of all ages, from elementary school to high school. My high school peers had been able to understand our video and tile ideas with ease but if the elementary schoolers could not understand our ideas, we would have to change our presentation of ideas. The elementary schoolers were our "extreme uses". This is a design term for the groups of people who will have the most trouble using your product or understanding your ideas. If we made sure that our video was interesting, and understandable, for our extreme users it would be interesting and understandable for all of the other users.
Inquiry Question: How much water does Agriculture use in California and is it sustainable?
NOTE: We did not record the answers that our students gave, we took notes. As a result, the responses to the interview questions do not contain the responses that we were actually given by the elementary schoolers but rather the content of their responses as we recorded them through notes.
