Moral compass project
Week 1Entry 1:
This graph shows the income of all Americans. It shows how most people make well below the 200 mark, even the 81st to 99th percentiles. Then we see the 1 percent of Americans that make insane amounts of money. This makes me think about equality, a topic we have been discussing in class for the last couple of days. If 99 percent of the US makes about the same amount of money compared to the 1 percent, and we already have large income gaps between the 99 percent, then how much is the 1 percent making? According to alternet.com $1,530,773. This is over 11 times what the average middle class person makes (about 50,000 a year). Not only is the 1 percent rich, they hold lots of power, they control politicians to make decisions and pass laws that promote that millionaire's interests and beliefs. instead of that politician representing the people that politician is representing a very rich individual. This is an inequality in the US (and abroad) that must be remedied.
Week 1Entry 2:
A place that always makes me feel good is the beach, I have always liked the beach. Unlike some other people though, I like the beach in the winter. I love the coastal fog and the cliffs. The crashing waves rhythmic motion and noise calm's me. I think that people have a tendency to make things too hard or complicated. Some people think that the more complicated and intricate something is, the better it is. When I go to the beach tough, I see a force of nature, simple yet powerful. The ocean smoothes everything over, all rock, no matter where they came from or how different they are from each other all end up smooth and round after the ocean. The ocean has the same effect on people, in my opinion, people at the beach, no matter how different are able to enjoy and play in harmony.

"People generally see what they look for and hear what they listen for"
-TKAM, Atticus p.232
Week 1Entry 3:
This is a Quote from to kill a mockingbird that really resonates with me. This quote helps explain how people keep their prejudice even in the light of facts and how people create their own "facts" by using out of context examples to prove their point. When people "see what they look for and hear what they listen for" and then go showing these examples off as truths, they are bending the facts and creating their own reality. People do this all the time, bending reality in their favor. Many of the people supporting one angle of the fact are very good at convincing you that their opinion is really the fact. I like the way that Atticus captures this piece of wisdom and I will remember it.

Week 1Entry 4:
I think this is an interesting quote. By it's definition of courage, courage is making a stand. Atticus knows that there is no way that he can win the case for the Black man he is defending in court, he lives in the Jim Crow era, the whole system is intent on ensuring the failure of Blacks to win a court case, to be richer than whites or to have better educations. However, Atticus is going to make a stand and defend him anyway because he believes it is the right thing to do. Even though he knows he's "licked" before he has even started, He's going to do what's right. I think this might be one of the main themes of the book, doing right against all odds.

Week 1Entry 5:
This is a picture that shows modern day Syria. The conflict in Syria has been going on for 2 years now. Around 2 million people have been turned into refugees and more than 100,000 people have died. That is a lot of deaths for the conflict so far. Since the protests in Syria resulting from other middle eastern nations overthrowing, or trying to overthrow their dictators, Syria's government has been killing its own people. First they quietly killed protest leaders. Then they abducted people killing them and their families. Then they started to openly fire on the protesters. Then, Syria's rebels formed and started to return fire. The war has been a long struggle, seemingly without end. The dictator Assad has not been listening to warnings given by the UN, the US in particular. Finally, very recently, the Syrian government has used chemical warfare to kill approximately 1,400 civilians. Now the US is threatening to attack Assad's forces. It's sad how a once peacefull-ish struggle to bring democracy to Syria. Now, almost 3 years later Syria is a warzone where some of the worst weapons have been used.
