“a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because their
still human”-Atticus page 210
Week 2

Date- September 8th 2013
Atticus says this the day after Scout, thinking that her father was being approached by friends and not a mob, ran into the middle of the showdown and started talking to the mob as people. Scout didn’t know any better, in fact she was embarrassed to find herself rushing into the middle of a group
of strangers. Because of her innocence, she was able to “tame” the crowd. She addressed all of the men in the mob as people, not enemies. She got “Mr.Cunningham to step into Atticus’s shoes for a minute”. All of this, and much more interesting encounters happened in chapters 15 and 16. It touched me that it was Scout an unarmed eight year old, not Mr. Underwood a full grown man with a shotgun pointed out of his window who saved Atticus, “ real courage is not a man with a gun in his hand.” Is another quote from Atticus that is relevant to this part of the story. Scout ran right into the mob and started up a conversation, giving the men with evil intent a window outside of their rage, a chance to remember that Atticus was still a person, just like them. Luckily the feeling lasted long enough for Atticus, Scout, Jem and Dill to leave.

This quote is of Scout describing Mr. Ewell, an all around terrible person who, beats up his children, wastes all his money on beer and is insulting to everyone he encounters. What disturbs me about this quote is that in Scout’s eight year old mind, as bad as he is, is just slightly above the Black population of Maycomb, a.k.a. “his nearest neighbors”. To Scout, as with almost all the white population during the Jim Crow era being black is the lowest possible social niche, rock bottom. To Whites at this time the nicest, most helpful, hardworking Black person is equivalent to the most mean, selfish, lazy white person. This makes it impossible for a Black person, no matter how great, to be instantly set up for failure. How can a person being perceived as trash by society from the very beginning of their existence succeed? Jim crow racism is this notion, “The best black person is worse than the worst White person”

Something very strange and sad to me is that the united states was struggling with the same issues about Blacks and their rights in the1960’s as the issues with black in the 1860’s. In the 1860’s the abolitionist movement happened. This movement was composed up of many radicals, all of which wanted to get rid of slavery and give blacks the same rights as Whites. They were extremists and many, many people opposed them. However, through many difficult efforts and the help of former slave Frederick Douglass the Abolitionists were able to polarize the country even more until finally, the Civil War happened. Though the civil war was really about the States rights vs. Federal rights issue, Slavery was a main point of heated debate on the larger issue. Also, after the civil war, when the Federal government (the North) won many laws and amendments to the constitution were put in place to make Black's and Whites more equal.
Unfortunately, almost immediately, the states in the South developed the elaborate Jim crow system, legalizing segregation at the state level. This put Black's in a very similar position that they were in in the 1800's. Finally, with the help of the government and enormous demonstrations for equality by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and various other reverends and activists Segregation was deemed unconstitutional and the law was enforced. So, as you can see, it was a long and difficult struggle for equality that is still continuing today but at least we get a little closer to equality each time.

I love Art
Week 2
Entry-4

In fact I am an artist myself. However, I do not like
all types of art. Leonardo Da’ Vinchi said that art was meant to copy the real
world as accurately as possible. This statement though, came out of a time when
there was no photography and painting or sketching was the only way to capture a
moment or show the physical features of a person. Then, hundreds of years later,
photography was invented and many artistst now found it useless to take the time
and effort to copy the real world when you could do it much more easily with a
camera. Out of this time period, modern and abstract art emerged. People tried
to capture something that machines couldn’t, things beyond the physical world.
In my opinion, both extremes are distasteful. If an artist is simply
copying the world around him as accurately as possible I primarily see their art
as a big waste of time when you can achieve something even more accurate, and
equally beautiful through photography. On the other extreme, art that is too
abstract and is just a series of blotches and lines. And has no context about
what emotion or feeling, etc that the art is trying to convey is , in my
opinion, equally pointless.
Finally, the kind of art I
do like is a type that conveys a certain emotion but still has a shape that is
identifyable. For example, I like art
that tells a story using human or human-like characters. I like paintings
that take advantage of the medium, making thick lines that are clearly paint
instead of trying to make perfect lines. Some of my favorite artists are Pablo
Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and Salvador Dali at times as well as some new
contemporary artists.

This summer, I went on a trip with my mom to Big Bear mountain
and it’s surrounding forests. Big bear is a magnificent place where I was
surrounded by nature and small wild animals. Big bear is beautiful in the summer
with lots of trees that smell like vanilla and lots of bright green shrubs and
bushes. One day, my mom and I went on a long, 6 mile hike. After we walked up a
mountain, crossed a fallen tree, crossed various dirt roads, walked through a
meadow and climbed over rocks we arrived at our destination. Grand View point,
at the top of the mountain, we looked out and saw all of the surrounding
mountains and valleys. We saw all the trees, our campgrounds at South fork and
way off in the distance the haze of the city. It was a great view well worth
the hike and I will never forget being there. That experience represents
something that defines me, I love to be outdoors, exercising and enjoying
nature.
