Sadako and the 1000 Paper Cranes
Summary
Sadako and the 1000 paper cranes is a short novel about a young Japanese girl called Sadako who died from leukemia due to nuclear radiation.
This book follows her journey from a normal Japanese girl to a leukemia patient. At the beginning of the book, Sadako is an energetic girl who loves to run. She is one of the best runners in her school. She wants to compete but at her first big competition she starts feeling dizzy and disoriented for no reason. She tries to ignore the dizziness but it only gets worse. Her parents take her to the hospital where they find out that she has leukemia. The doctors tell her that the disease is from nuclear radiation and that it was passed on to her from her mother. She was born with it. She is forced to stay at the hospital. She starts to get weaker and weaker. One day, her best friend comes to visit her. Her fiend tells her that there is a legend that says that anyone who makes 1000 origami paper cranes will be granted one wish. Sadako decides that she will make 1000 paper cranes, so that her wish to get well will come true. Sadako starts to make the to make the paper cranes. At first she makes sloppy ones but eventually she can make them with ease. She keeps making the cranes even as her health continues to deteriorate. One day, she dies, half way through making a crane. However, her friends and family finish making the 1000 paper cranes in her honor.
