Week 9
Entry 1
Orson
Welles,
someone who I thought was just the man behind the radio version
of
The War of the Worlds and never had really considered to be great until, that
is that I saw Me and Orson Welles, a movie based off of a book. In the
movie I
came to learn about all of the accomplishments of this great man.
As it turns
out, Orson Welles was not only a radio actor but also an
actor, writer and
producer of both plays on Broadway and movies in
Hollywood, he reimagined
Shakespeare and made it accessible to the people
of his time, the late 1930's.
In his plays, most famously Caesar, he used
emotion provoking images of the time
such as fascist military clothing to
represent Caesar and his followers as well
as the well dressed mobster to
represent the followers of Brutus(the guy who
kills Caesar along with a lot
of other high ranking roman officials "et tu
Brutus?"). He made
Shakespeare accessible to normal people so that
they could understand
the story of Caesar without having to learn extensively
about ancient Rome
and their culture. He adapted it to be a great experience for
the common
person. I also learned how he made most of his big accomplishments
before
he turned 26 (including Caesar) and how he was an enormous egomaniac once
described to have "an octopus of an ego". I am very interested about Orson
Welles now and am determined to find out more about his life and career.
