In this final blog post, I will reflect upon how my internship experience made me consider my college path and career. Throughout this experience, I have observed and learned about my mentors at CDIP, and had time to reflect on my own academic & professional preparation.
The work I have been doing at CDIP falls under the umbrella of computer science and oceanography. My internship has pushed me to think about new possibilities for my college major and future career. One of the main things I have learned about myself through this internship is that I love to be connected to work that takes place in the physical world and is, as much as possible, outdoor. I have enjoyed working on data and other computer related work but only when it is balanced with work with the buoys outdoors.
Asking my mentors about their education has also given me some comfort. My mentors major or Masters degree was not always specifically tailored to the work they were doing. I have learned that a physics major can be useful for programming and that an environmental science or ecology major can be valued at a place that focuses on buoys.
With this new, real world experience, I have a better idea of the work i want to spend my career doing.
