Vans Shoe Design Project
One of the first major projects that I did this semester was the Vans shoe design contest. I drew original art pieces on the shoe design templates. I drew designs for 3 of the 4 possible theme categories. I made three final products. One for the Art category, one for the Music category and one for the Local Flavor category.
Here are photos of my Vans shoe designs:
This piece is my final product for the Art category. It is an abstract representation of the ocean.

The next two pieces are for the Local Flavor category.
This piece is my rough draft. It is a representation of the ocean with a Pelican flying overhead.

This is my final product for the Local Flavor category. I used the critique that my classmates gave me to improve my original design. I also used sharpies instead of colored pencil to have a cleaner image.
The next two pieces are for the Music category of the competition.

This is my revised and improved final product for the music category. On the bottom of the shoe I have the piano key pattern and on the top I have abstract patterns with bright colors to represent music.
After I turned in all of the above pieces to Mr. Sevilla he chose my Local Flavor Design to be entered in the competition. He said he liked the style it was in but he wanted me to modify it to fit the Action sports category. I incorporated his suggestion and changed the pelican to a surfer and got rid of the writing that said "San Diego".
Here is my final revised shoe design.

After Mr. Sevilla approved my final design he gave me a pair of plain white Vans slip on shoes on which to paint my design as well as 2 packs of paint pens. Below are the pictures of the progress I have made so far painting them:
I enjoyed this project. While it was open ended, it was also structured enough to give me a sense of direction. It was helpful to have specific theme categories for possible shoe designs. I feel good about my final products. I took time to think about what I wanted to draw and did my best to make the final product look good.
