I just had my first day as a CDIP intern. The experience was enjoyable and exciting but also very different than I had imagined.
Several things immediately struck me about the workplace. First, the building in which CDIP operates is very small. They take up about half of the first and second floors in a building called Isaacs Hall.
Second, Everyone was very relaxed and friendly. Because I hold Scripps Oceanographic Institute in high regard I assumed that the people who worked there would be very academic and a little mean. However, when I began interacting with the staff, I realized that, although they had an advanced understanding of the buoys and took their work very seriously, they were also down to earth and friendly.
They gave me work to do right away but trusted me to get it done by myself, on my own time. Currently, I am working on 3 flyers/information sheets containing facts about the CDIP buoys for Ms. McWhorter, who is in charge of outreach and public relations at CDIP. I enjoy doing this project because it's something that I can do in photoshop, a program I am very familiar with, and it helps me better understand the work that the CDIP staff does. It's a good introductory project that will help Ms. McWhorter create useful information sheets and help me better understand CDIP's work.
After I finish this project, I am going to start working with Grant Morton, a programmer data analyst todo a project where I work with data. I am looking forward to helping with the actual data collection and communication between the buoys and CDIP headquarters at SIO.
I am a little worried about this project because I do not yet know exactly what I will be doing but I am looking forward learning new things about CDIP and data collection. From my experience today, this will be an internship full of many great opportunities.
