Hello everybody and welcome to my 2016 internship Blog. This year I will be interning with the CDIP (Coastal Data Information Program) at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. The CDIP collects and analyzes and publishes data about the coastal environment. This data is useful for coastal engineers, scientists and mariners. The data is collected from a daily to monthly basis. Weekly information includes wave height, wave peak period, wave average period. A lot of their data is collected through buoys. Their long range information includes parameter data, 9 band energy data, etc. They also collect all of their data year after year so you can search for the averages, mimimums, and maximums of wave height, etc of any day from 1975 until present day.
My mentor is Julie Thomas, the Principal investigator and Program Manager of the CDIP.
For this internship I will be doing data visualization and analysis on the CDIP's data as well as checking the buoys in La Jolla. I do not yet have the specifics of how I will be collecting data or exactly what data I will be in charge of. Tomorrow I will be going to have a one on one meeting with Julie Thomas at the CDIP. During that meeting I hope to get a tour of the facility as well as learn what my duties will entail each week and how many hours a day and days per week I will be working.
I am excited about getting to visit Scripps and possibly get to go out on a boat and check the buoys. I also am glad that I will get to work with real coastal data. However, I am worried that I will be inside looking at a computer screen data all day. Hopefully there will be a good balance of being outside and inside.
